Treatment of women and orthodox judaism: criticism by Barbra Streisand.

Certainly she was «referring to isolated incidents», but she mentioned, in any case, events we should take into account, «in which ultra-Orthodox men tried to force women to sit separately at the rear of buses that go through their neighbourhoods, as well as more serious clashes in which ultra-Orthodox Jews tried to prevent women donning prayer shawls and carrying Torah scrolls from praying at the Western Wall in Jerusalem» (The Telegraph.co.uk).

Barbra Streisand went to Israel «to take part to the celebration» of President Shimon Peres’ 90th birthday. However, «she did not hesitate» to criticise drastic «attitudes sometimes taken by the Orthodox Jews towards women» (ANSA).

According to The Telegraph.co.uk, ultra-Orthodow Jews, who enjoy a considerable «power in government and religious affairs, fear that allowing women to make such inroads will erode their authority».
