Montreal and mug shots between the two world wars. Historical documents about a lifestyle not so… “traditionalist”?

According to la Repubblica.it, after the First World War, Montreal was considered as the «capital of vice» in North America. In effect, it seems that, during the prohibition period in the United States, the «city of Quebec proved itself as the entertainment destination».

The photographic archive of the municipality made a series of mug shots public: «prostitutes, brothels owners and criminals involved in bet» (click here to look at the images).

Prohibition ended in «1933 and with the diseases increase» this kind of business started to worry public opinion, also because of the corruption between the security force.

«The mug shots were collected in the 1950s by a board of enquiry» with the task to investigate on the «corruption of police officers who during the previous years» had been bribed by «criminal organisation» (la Repubblica.it).
